STATEMENT

My painting represents and contemplates liminality, a state where one form becomes another—figure to ground, color to mark, representation to abstraction.  I explore these continuums through improvisational methods led by the materials themselves: one mark will activate another kind of mark, one color will request another color, and so on.  I think of this as a continuation of the unending processes of nature that make and unmake themselves, every aspect dependent on every other.  Slow or fast, motion is key, as is the sense that the imagery is in the process of coming to be.

Composing these paintings is an embodied project and doesn’t engage analysis or verbalization as primary experiences. I hope they inspire that kind of freedom for those who approach them.
